THE PRIME NUMBER FASHION PHENOMENON
FASHION SHOW:
NEVER BEFORE SEEN T-SHIRT DESIGNS WITH PRIME NUMBERS
7pm MARCH 12th 2008
EPRESKERT

Hungary has produced some of the great mathematicians who have worked in number theory, including Erdos Pal (1913-1996), Turan Pal (1910-1976), and Alfred Renyi (1921-1970). These men worked on problems that often involved prime numbers. For instance, without using the arsenal of mathematical analysis, Erdos proved that there is always a prime between n and 2n, where n is a positive integer (Chebyshev’s Theorem). Moreover, he showed that the number of primes less than or equal to x is approximated by x/ln(x) and that this becomes increasingly accurate as x goes to infinity (The Prime Number Thoerem).

It is no surprise that prime numbers have recently entered Hungary’s fashion vocabulary. Our vibrant new company, Prim, has created trendy shirts that feature “2”, “3”, “5”, and “7” – the prime numbers that we know and love. Additionally, we’re showing off some less-well-known-but-just-as-cool prime numbers on trousers and shirts. Come see these t-shirts in a fashion show. Bring a friend. Catch the buzz! Check out the revolutionary new mutual embrace of fashion and mathematics!!

A prímszámdivat-jelenség

Divatbemutató:

Soha nem látott pólómodellek prímszámokkal

2008. március 12. 1900

1063 Budapest, Epreskert

February, 2008

The overall concept of this project is to make prime numbers fashionable – or rather to exploit the fashionability of prime numbers. The two main components are the (1) public aspect and the (2) exhibition aspect.

(1) I’ve created 40 signs that will be posted on Sunday, March 2nd on existing advertisements located between the tram stations at Nyugati, Oktogon, and Kiraly. These handmade signs alter the meaning of the advertisement to some idea about prime numbers. If you would like to see examples, please visit http://ideas-database.blogspot.com . I have posted some test pictures that I took the weekend of February 23-24. I will also post pictures on this website when I get the chance. I will be handing out fliers that explain the legacy of Hungarian mathematicians in number theory. These fliers will suggest that number theory’s entrance into the Hungarian fashion world is inevitable. Its precedent in mathematics is proof. Furthermore, we use prime numbers everyday when our credit cards transmit coded information, and it’s about time we acknowledged their hard work and ubiquity. The arguments on each flier will have its own logic and passion.

(2) The second aspect of the project is to bring prime numbers into the fashion world through stylish t-shirts. I have designed some t-shirts that feature the first few prime numbers: the ones that we know and love. There is 2. There is 3. 5, 7, etc. I’m also having some of my own clothing numberized. I’m adding prime numbers to shirts, pants, etc. In addition, I have created some prime number accessories in the form of hemp necklaces that have either prime numbered beads or a prime number of beads. These clothing and jewelry will be sold at the fashion show, which will take place (tentatively) at 7pm on March 12th at Epreskert, near Bajza utca. The clothing will be sold throughout the exhibition – until March 26th.
